Standard 5


Standard 5: An education leader promotes the success of every student by acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.
Functions:
  1. Ensure a system of accountability for every student’s academic and social success
  2. Model principles of self-awareness, reflective practice, transparency, and ethical behavior
  3. Safeguard the values of democracy, equity, and diversity
  4. Consider and evaluate the potential moral and legal consequences of decision-making
  5. Promote social justice and ensure that individual student needs inform all aspects of schooling

The Educational Leaders Constituent Council (ELCC) has taken the ISLLC Standards and reworded them in the form of the expected knowledge and abilities that an aspiring leader
should possess. Their wording makes it easier to ask questions of oneself in terms of readiness for a formal leadership role.

Censorship is an issue that arises with some regularity. The latest case involves a new edition of Huckleberry Finn that has replaced all of the "N" words with "slave" in reference to one of the main characters, Jim, who accompanies Huck on his famous raft adventure down the MIssissippi. Political satirist, Stephen Colbert, on his Comedy Channel show The Colbert Report speakes "in favor" of censorship.
Is there a time when censorship is appropriate, or is it a slippery slope and to be avoided at all cost?

Students who had taken my EL 540 class may remember the case of "the case of the dancing teacher". Right here in Michigan there has been a very similar case reported on line by MiLive.com ( a good on line source for MI ed news).

I found this article. It is long, but it raises several important questions that can help you determine whether or not you are acting in an ethical manner. The author says, “Because we know the Golden Rule, but fail to put it into place at all times, we need to set standards and work toward realizing them.” This article made me think about ethics and being a teacher. Why is it so difficult for some teachers (or people in general) to act in an ethical manner…in the classroom and on their own personal time? (JS)

5.1 An article today about potential cheating in schools on standardized tests. Article. This happens to be at the middle shcool I was at. I do not recall any high scores or particular erros when we got the scores from the state. How you as a principal ensure that all teachers are following proper ethics when giving an assessment? This is a very interesting interview with The Equity Project (TEP) Charter School founder and principal, Zeke Vanderhook. Katie Couric reports on this experimental New York City charter school founded on the idea of hiring the best teachers by paying them $125,000, while denying them tenure. Zeke believes that the best way to raise student achievement in this country is to attract and retain the most talented teachers possible pay them extremely well and hold them accountable for producing results. In this school there are 247 5th and 6th graders and 15 teachers. The expectations are similar to that of a professional sports team. The teachers video tape lessons, evaluate each other and will be let go if they are not producing the desired results. What does everyone think about this approach to teaching? (JC)
